The Leaf Blog: Vesa vs. Jonas, A Familiar Situation…
The general feeling in Toronto right now seems to be that Jonas Gustavsson is the next Terry Sawchuk. Also, that Vesa Toskala is the next Andrew Raycroft.
Ron Wilson continues to promote Toronto’s goaltending depth as a potential catalyst for a Vesa Toskala’s resurgence, but so far, Toskala has played as though frightened of losing the #1 job.
Look no further than a recent 7-6 loss to Buffalo for evidence.
Brian Burke’s teams are supposedly constructed with job security in mind — the new Leafs GM says there should be healthy amounts of fear for roster players, which in turn will create more intense, motivated performances.
Burke is also keen on his roster earning every minute of playing time.
However, naming Vesa Toskala as the Buds’ opening night starter goes directly against that management strategy, and reminds Leaf fans of a not too faraway time…
DISSOLVE TO: 2007…
Think back to the Leafs’ season opener on October 3rd, 2007. Just four months prior to that tilt, John Ferguson Jr. had landed Vesa Toskala in a draft day trade, in which he gave up his club’s 1st and 2nd round picks. All observers, both in and out of Toronto, understood that Vesa was acquired to be the starting goaltender.
Despite being questioned daily on the subject of goaltending, both Paul Maurice and JFJ spoke of their strengthened “tandem”, as though the load would be shared by Vesa and Raycroft in the coming season. According to the club, Raycroft would begin the year as the team’s starting goaltender.
The Leafs likely would have drafted one of Lars Eller, Ryan McDonagh or Kevin Shattenkirk with their first round choice, and one of Eric Tangradi, P.K. Subban, or Aaron Palushaj with the second round pick. Palushaj, whom St. Louis selected with Toronto’s pick, is now rated by Hockey’s Future as the fifth best prospect in St. Louis’ system, while Eller is ranked third.
(The argument of whether Ferguson Jr. should have traded two prospects for a goaltender who had never held a #1 NHL job is not today’s topic, but it’s always fun to reminisce).
Vesa was the obvious replacement for Andrew Raycroft in 2007, despite how many times John Ferguson would mention Raycroft’s 37 wins of a year previous. The Leafs were very competitive on many nights in 06-07, but were never assured a victory unless they could muster at least four goals in support of the sleepy-eyed Raycroft.
In the end, Raycroft started the 07-08 opener vs. Ottawa, in which the Leafs lost in overtime, thanks partially to a Raycroft-allowed stinker by Daniel Alfredsson. The loss effectively kicked off the season on a sour note, in front of a backup goaltender. It was this status-quo start that gave the Leafs an 0-0-1 beginning to a season that provided Toronto with nothing more to be excited about than a seventh overall draft choice.
Now, in 2009, Vesa Toskala still has not proven himself as a true number one netminder, but for some reason, he finds himself being given a charity start on opening night.
Despite his current status as the Leafs’ backup netminder, Brian Burke’s acquisition of Jonas Gustavsson has been made with a familiar end result in mind — for Jonas to take the reigns as the starter in Toronto.
With a four-million dollar contract expiring at season’s end, the 32-year-old Toskala will need an impressive season for Leaf brass to retain him as a starter. Conversely, Gustavsson will become an RFA next summer, and negotiating a contract with a veteran of one NHL season will be considerably easier (and less expensive) for management.
Heralded as the best goaltender outside of the NHL, perhaps a close second to Manitoba Moose standout Cory Schneider, Gustavsson has more than lived up to the hype, not allowing a goal in three pre-season periods. His 2-on-0 stop against Detroit garnered a standing ovation from the pre-season crowd at the ACC, which tells you just how hungry Leaf fans are for above-average goaltending.
Jonas Gustavsson has looked every bit as good as his reputation has indicated thus far. He looks “monstrous” in his net, much like J.S. Giguere or Roberto Luongo. Brian Burke refers to Jonas as a “B+” goaltender, meaning butterfly plus — a goalkeeper who can use his size and positioning to “block shots”, as Burke says, while also having the ability to make the eye-popping saves that require speed and dexterity.
Just as much as Gustavsson’s personal pre-season showing should earn him the right to start Thursday vs. Montreal, the impression he has made on his teammates should equally be considered.
The confidence bestowed on every member of a hockey club by solid goaltending is immeasurable. Skaters are well aware who is standing in their home crease at all times, and the effect of playing in front of a good goaltender is similar to the feeling of protection that a Colton Orr brings — players can elevate their games if they have the assurance to fall back on their teammates.
To this point, Jonas has given the Maple Leafs reason to have faith in him, albeit in limited playing time. Vesa Toskala has done quite the opposite, reacting to pressure in the worst way possible. Leaf fans shouldn’t feel comforted, knowing that their supposed #1 netminder is this easily phased.
If Burke and Wilson are trying to breed a winning environment in Toronto, they should stick to the company line — and awarding opportunity to Vesa does just the opposite.

No doubt Gustavsson is our man of the future. But to have undergone a heart operation and play all of three periods in the entire pre-season is not good. He is not ready if/when Toskala falters. MacDonald should be starting tonight with Toskala on the bench. Jonas needs to go play a few games at the very least with the Marlies. I do not understand Burke and Wilson's thinking regarding Vesa. I suspect he is on a leash shorter than Barbie's belt, and we will eradicate this piece of useless vermin (sorry for the hyperbole but I am that annoyed and disappointed with Toskala) as soon as he starts screwing up again this year.
Funny you mention Corey Schneider with the Moose. Poor guy was chopped by 'Couver to make room for………………………Andrew Raycroft. Razor should be banished to playing for the Hohhot Hobbitants in Inner Mongolia. And I suspect we will be hearing THE FINN will be plying his trade for the Helsinki Hellcats in the best Finnish beer league there is very very soon.

nahhh The Monster is ready for the NHL. Putting him on the Marlies would be playing it too safe. If he has one bad game down in the A imagine what that would do to his confidence when he got a shot at the NHL. Goaltending is 50% mental and 50% physical, and right now he's got both aspects of the game working in his favor.
I'm also one of the few people who think Toskala is going to have a great year. He's NEVER been 100% healthy in a Leaf uniform until this season, and he's in his "prime" for a goalie. One bad preseason game (ok, maybe like 3 or 4) doesn't mean anything. Vesa will play well this year and I imagine the leafs will be able to ride into the second round of the playoffs on the backs of their two stud goalies. I'm calling a Jennings Trophy possibility for the buds this year. Yeah, I said it.
