Instant Analysis: Tanguay Headed to Tampa Bay
The Southeast Division’s most dominant top-6 forward group may not belong to the Washington Capitals this season.
The Signing: The Tampa Bay Lightning sign Unrestricted Free Agent forward Alex Tanguay. The deal is worth 2.5 million over one year.
What Tanguay Brings:
Alex Tanguay is a 9-year NHL veteran who will turn 30 this year. He is a left winger with a left-handed shot, and possesses a good frame at 6′1”, 191 pounds. However, he is known for his playmaking ability and excels with his slick hands and by beating opponents with his foot speed.
A Stanley Cup winner in 2001 with Colorado, Tanguay has put up points consistently throughout his career. Since the lockout he has recorded seasons of 78, 81, 58, and most recently, 41 points in an injury-shortened 50-game season with Montreal.
How He Fits In Tampa
Tanguay could excel with the Lightning simply because he won’t be looked upon to lead the offensive charge. He will be a fixture on the top-6 and the powerplay, and will likely be given the opportunity to play with Vincent Lecavalier. Last season the line of Malone, Stamkos and St. Louis found chemistry, so Tanguay will be encouraged to get the puck to Lecavalier, in hopes that Vinny can rediscover his 50-goal form of 06-07.
Tanguay tends to have assist-heavy point totals, but he is still capable of scoring 25 goals or more, and has several times in his career. But his goal totals won’t be as great a concern in Tampa, as St. Louis, Malone, and Lecavalier will likely eclipse the 25-goal plateau. Not to mention Steven Stamkos, who exploded in the second half last season, showing the type of skill that makes a sophomore slump seem unlikely.
As beneficial as healthy competition can be for a forward, Tanguay’s spot in the top-6 is all but guaranteed, as the talent level drops off significantly after #5 on Tampa’s forward depth chart. There is yet a clear candidate to play the right side on Tampa’s second scoring unit.
Verdict
This move brings Tampa much closer to being a playoff team. Some would argue that they have a playoff-caliber roster, but last year’s results are still fresh in the minds of prognosticators. Tampa acquired a wealth of forwards over the summer of 2008 and expected a group of strangers to mesh. However, this year could be different, as a more calculated (albeit similar) approach was taken, this time to strengthen the defense and create healthy competition for jobs.
The key is still their defense, which boasts as many as 7 new faces, and will need to mesh in order for the Lightning to experience any success. However, the team is laden with more talent than last season’s group, which should equate to some victories in a wobbly Southeast Division.
The Lightning badly needed another top-6 forward, and Tanguay fits the bill quite nicely. He has played alongside top-flight talent in the past and shown that his production does not suffer in different environments. Even with distractions and disappointment in Montreal last season, he continued on his usual scoring pace. Look for a healthy Tanguay to once again top 65 points and score between 18-25 goals.

Hey Mike, unfortunately the lack of titles is more to do with our geographic location rather than the kindle itself. That means you can’t get the books on their site either (unless they are physical book strangely). .I’m not sure the exact mechanism of how they check. If it is by credit card address, the way around it would be to have a US based card, or to somehow set up an account to pay by paypal so the address is hidden (you could even use paypal to generate one time credit card numbers). If they check by IP then it would be easy enough to use a proxying service to get round it. .Trouble is for me that the kindle is now linked with my existing account, so I would also need to transfer that over to a new ‘owner’. .You can probably see that your comments have set me wondering how to get through their system! .If you want to have a look at what books you can get, and have an iPhone or iPod Touch, get the kindle app, as you can browse, buy and read books from there too. The screen size is a bit small but for looking at book choice and browsing, I actually prefer it to the kindle. .On your second question I can’t see a good reason why you would need an Australian version rather than one from anywhere else. The wireless connection is ATT global roaming, so is not particularly linked with a carrier here. As for plugs, you just don’t get one here, so ordering from elsewhere might actually be an advantage (I know they get one in the UK for instance). It would be worth a search around, but I can’t see there would be any problem order one in India. .I guess the other thing I should mention here is the iPad. If you can hold out, the iPad might be an even more compelling book reader than the kindle. It certainly looks slicker anyway. Personally I have my doubts as the kindle is as big as I want to hold in bed or on the sofa (I’ve heard that’s a problem with the kindle DX too). .I hope this has answered you questions in a round about way! .Hope you are enjoying India too. It’s one place I haven’t been, but would love to get there sometime! .Cheers .Simon

Great result at the Euros last night. I watched Bosingwa closely as I thought he might be a good signing for Cheslski and his ability to get in a cross is frightening. Going back he was totally rubbish though so looks like another multi-million-pound flop in the making. Meanwhile Scolari got his tactics and planning totally wrong. It’s shaping up to be another hilarious year for Roman and his droogs.
