Instant Analysis: Darryl Sutter Deals Again
Darryl Sutter continued his overhaul of the Calgary Flames late Monday night, one day after acquiring Ian White, Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan and Jamal Mayers from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 7-player trade.
The Trade
To Calgary: C Chris Higgins and RW Ales Kotalik
To New York Rangers: C Olli Jokinen, LW Brandon Prust.
From Calgary’s Standpoint:
The Flames have had trouble scoring, and Sutter will attempt to mitigate this problem with two struggling forwards from New York. Higgins was great in his first three seasons in Montreal, averaging 25 goals a season. Since then, he has struggled mightily. He has just 6 goals and 8 assists in 55 games for the Rangers this year, and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. Kotalik has also had trouble getting his name on the scoresheet this season. He hit career highs in goals (25), assists (37) and points (62) during the 2005-06 season with Buffalo, but hasn’t come close to reaching those numbers since. Kotalik has two years left on his contract at $3 million per season — not exactly a bargain when you consider his current production (22 points in 45 GP).
From New York’s Standpoint:
The Rangers gain a valuable pivot in Jokinen and a serviceable third-liner in Prust. Jokinen didn’t provide the offense the Flames were looking for, but he has scored at elite levels in the past, and a player of Marian Gaborik’s caliber should activate Jokinen’s game somewhat. Prust knows his role and will be counted on to bang and grind. Jokinen will become a UFA on July 1st, while Prust becomes an RFA. In surrendering Kotalik and Higgins, the Rangers don’t lose much offense from their lineup prior to the deal, so they should consider themselves winners for adding Jokinen and shedding Kotalik’s contract.
Final Thoughts
Curiously, this trade was all lined up for Sunday night, but was put on hold. Rumours circulated that the Flames needed Jokinen for Monday night’s game against the Flyers. That appears to be true, as this deal was completed just 90 minutes after the Flames’ 3-0 loss to the Flyers. That is risky business, because if either Jokinen or Prust were injured, the trade would be off.
As for the results of the trade, the Rangers get the best player in the deal. Jokinen is a proven playmaker who can complement Gaborik on the top line and the power play. The Flames will need to worry about chemistry, as they have injected six new players into their lineup in the last two days and traded away four. Either way, both teams will have a fresh look in their push for the playoffs.
It’s been a long tumble down from the top for Olli Jokinen. He scored 89 and 91 points with the Panthers and was on the cusp of superstardom. However, he was moved out of Phoenix, and now from Calgary, so there must be something foul about Olli. At just 31-years-old, it’s strange to see a once-productive player take a giant step back in his game. That seems to be Jokinen’s case, but perhaps a strong finish in New York will rejuvenate him.
