Weekly NHL Power Rankings: November 9th 2009

The Hurricanes have been struggling mightily, and with Eric Staal and Cam Ward on the shelf, this team’s misery doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon.

The Leafs are 3-7-5, but there is finally optimism surrounding the team, thanks largely to Jonas Gustavsson, and to a lesser extent, Phil Kessel.

The Islanders have played themselves into the middle tier. (!!!)

Meanwhile, when it comes to teams of consequence, the San Jose Sharks pummeled the Pens, which was enough to vault the Sharkies to top spot in this week’s overall rankings.

The Devils, Flames, and Flyers went 3-0-0 last week, cementing themselves in the top-10.

TOP 10

1. San Jose Sharks (+2 spots)
Record: 12-4-2
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (vs. NSH, vs. DAL, @ STL, @ CHI)
It was supposed to be a battle between two of the league’s most dominant teams, but the Sharks trounced the Pens 5-0, showing why they’re as good in reality as they are on paper.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins (-1 spot)
Record: 12-5-0
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ BOS, vs. NJD, vs. BOS)
Back-to-back losses against Los Angeles and San Jose knock the Pens out of their #1 spot. It’s clear that without a star winger in the fold, the Pens function best with their complete ‘Big 3′ up the middle — but who wouldn’t miss Evgeni Malkin?

3. New Jersey Devils (+6 spots)
Record: 11-4-0
Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. ANA, @ PIT, vs. PIT)
They’ve won 8 straight on the road, while finishing the week 3-0-0, and recently welcomed Patrick Elias back to the club from injury. How does Lou do it?

4. Colorado Avalanche (-2 spots)
Record: 12-4-2
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ CHI, vs. VAN)
Ryan O’Reilly has to be an early candidate for rookie of the year, as he has posted 14 points and a +13 rating. The Avs lost at home for the first time this year, but the remain atop their division, and tied for the Western Conference lead.

5. Calgary Flames (+1 spot)
Record: 10-4-1
Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (@ MTL, @ BUF, @ TOR)
Defense is King in Calgary, as the Flames collected three tidy wins, two on the road, while surrendering four goals in the process. Phaneuf is looking Team Canada worthy, taking care of business in his own end and collecting 10 points in 15 games thus far.

6. Philadelphia Flyers (+5 spots)
Record: 9-4-1
Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. OTT, vs. BUF)
If there’s a positive the Flyers can take from their injury troubles, perhaps it’s allowing James van Riemsdyk the opportunity to show he belongs in the NHL. However, with 14 points in 12 games, it’s likely he would have played his way into the top-6 under any circumstances.

7. Washington Capitals (no movement)
Record: 10-3-4
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. NYI, vs. MIN, @ NJD)
A couple of emphatic wins vs. Florida (11 total goals for) exemplified just how bad the Panthers are, or that Washington can score without Ovechkin — maybe both.

8. Chicago Blackhawks (-4 spots)
Record: 8-5-2
Last Week: 0-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. LAK, vs. COL, vs. TOR, vs. SJS)
Perhaps the Hawks can use their upcoming 4-game homestand to get once again catch fire, after a lackluster week going 0-1-1.

9. New York Rangers (-4 spots)
Record: 10-7-1
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. ATL, @ OTT)
Brandon Dubinsky and Chris Drury were both injured vs. Calgary, which should hurt the Rangers, whose depth has been one of their greatest assets this season.

10. Buffalo Sabres (-2 spots)
Record: 9-4-1
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. EDM, vs. CGY, @ PHI)
Jhonas Enroth’s 4-2 loss to Boston is a good indication of where this club would be without Ryan Miller, who has been superhuman this season.


MIDDLE 10

11. Los Angeles Kings (+14 spots)
Record: 10-5-2
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ CHI, @ CAR, @ ATL, @TB)
The league’s newest dynamic duo of Kopitar and Smyth continued to produce last week, including a 4-point game for Smyth vs. the Coyotes, and a 2-goal performance for Kopitar in a win vs. defending champion Pittsburgh. Jonathan Quick needs to get his SV% higher than .900 though, for the Kings to have any hopes of contending.

12. Columbus Blue Jackets (+4 spots)
Record: 9-5-2
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (vs. DET, vs. ANA)
Steve Mason has been awful statistically (.891, 3.27), but the Jackets continue to win, which speaks to the strides the organization has made in the last couple of years. 20-year-old Jakub Voracek is second in team scoring with 12 points.

13. Phoenix Coyotes (-3 spots)
Record: 10-7-0
Last Week: 1-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. MTL, vs. DAL)
Finally, the Coyotes play to expectations, going 1-3 last week. Though, the Yotes continue to hold down a playoff spot, despite only Ed Jovanovski’s numbers jumping off the stats sheet. Why the team’s success? Perhaps it’s the team SV% of .926.

14. Tampa Bay Lightning (-1 spot)
Record: 6-4-5
Last Week: 2-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. MIN, vs. LAK)
Antero Nittymaaki has firmly taken hold of the starter’s job in Tampa, with an impressive .940 SV% and 1.95 GAA, while losing only once in regulation time.

15. Dallas Stars (-1 spot)
Record: 7-4-6
Last Week: 1-1-1
Games This Week: (@ SJS, @ PHO)
Brad Richards is earning every cent of his 7.8 million dollar contract, and while the Stars are currently in a playoff spot, they could use some better execution after 60 minutes, as they have a conference leading 6 overtime/shootout losses.

16. Detroit Red Wings (-1 spot)
Record: 7-5-3
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ CBJ, vs. VAN, vs. ANA)
Yet another injury strikes the Wings lineup, as Jason Williams breaks his leg in an embarrassing loss to the Maple Leafs, but the Wings managed to beat the Sharks two nights earlier. ie; Sometimes logic goes out the window in the NHL.

17. Ottawa Senators (no movement)
Record: 7-5-2
Last Week: 1-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. EDM, @ PHI, vs. NYR)
Spezza returned to the lineup and potted his first goal of the season, the OT winner vs. Tampa, but the Sens were unable to sustain momentum vs. the surging Devils. Goaltending must improve for the Ottawa, as Pascal Leclaire’s save percentage of .897 won’t lift this team into the playoffs.

18. Edmonton Oilers (no movement)
Record: 8-8-1
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (@ OTT, @ BUF, @ ATL)
Despite the losing record last week, Edmonton gained back some momentum with a 5-3 win over the Avalanche. Dustin Penner now has 21 points, and although he won’t get any serious consideration for Team Canada, Rick Nash, Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton are the only Canadians who have more points than Dusty.

19. Vancouver Canucks (+1 spot)
Record: 10-8-0
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ STL, @ DET, @ COL)
The Canucks are winning games without Roberto Luongo, thanks largely to a balanced offensive attack. Daniel Sedin is expected to return sooner than once believed.

20. New York Islanders (+7 spots)
Record: 6-6-5
Last Week: 2-2-0
Games This Week: (@ WAS, @ CAR, @ FLA)
John Tavares (13 pts in 17 games) is right where he’s supposed to be, among the league leaders in rookie scoring. More unexpectedly, the Isles currently sit in the final playoff spot in the East.

BOTTOM 10

21. Anaheim Ducks (+3 spots)
Record: 6-7-2
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ NJD, @ CBJ, @ DET)
2 assists for Saku Koivu helped the Ducks to a 4-0 win over Nashville, which is the type of performance Saku will need to contribute in order for the Ducks to climb the standings. Selanne currently leads the charge to win the NHL’s Cy Young award, with 9 goals and 1 assist.

22. Boston Bruins (-1 spot)
Record: 7-7-2
Last Week: 1-2-1
Games This Week: (vs. PIT, vs. FLA, @ PIT)
What happens when your top two centres are out of the lineup? You get shut out in back-to-back road games. Don’t be deceived by their win vs. Buffalo, as Jonas Enroth was in net for the Sabres.

23. Atlanta Thrashers (-1 spot)
Record: 7-6-1
Last Week: 2-2-0
Games This Week: (@ NYR, vs. LAK, vs. EDM)
The Thrashers went 2-2 without their captain and leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk, managing some offensive bursts along the way, scoring 5 vs. Montreal and 3 vs. Columbus and the Islanders. Nik Antropov is producing but is still without a goal.

24. Montreal Canadiens (-5 spots)
Record: 8-9-0
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. CAL, @ PHO, @ NSH)
Jaroslav Halak’s agent Allan Walsh made an insulting remark about Carey Price on his Twitter account, which should stir up some unwelcome goaltender controversy this week. Nobody does goaltender controversies better than Montreal.

25. Nashville Predators (-13 spots)
Record: 7-7-1
Last Week: 1-1-0
Games This Week: (@ SJS, @ STL, vs. MTL)
J.P. Dumont is the only Pred to hit double digits, with 11 points, while Shea Weber is second with 9 points. Steve Sullivan and Jason Arnott’s miserable 5 point starts especially hurt.

26. Toronto Maple Leafs (+3 spots)
Record: 3-7-5
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (vs. MIN, @ CHI, vs. CGY)
Results became progressively better last week for the Leafs, who capped off the week with a dominant 5-1 performance over Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson has shown above-average ability in goal, something this franchise has been missing since Ed Belfour’s departure.

27. St. Louis Blues (-3 spots)
Record: 5-6-4
Last Week: 0-0-3
Games This Week: (vs. VAN, vs. NSH, vs. SJS)
Youngsters Perron, Oshie, and Eller scored this week for the Blues — unfortunately, they all scored one goal each, and the team only managed one additional goal over the week, for a grand total of four goals in three games.

28. Minnesota Wild (-2 spots)
Record: 6-10-0
Last Week: 1-1-0
Games This Week: (@ TOR, @ TB, @ WAS)
Playing an offensive-minded system under Todd Richards, the Wild will need more from Martin Havlat. He was pointless in a win vs. Dallas, and minus-3 with no points in a loss to the Canucks last week. The Wild will now play four straight on the road.

29. Florida Panthers (-1 spot)
Record: 5-9-1
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (@ BOS, vs. NYI)
The good news: Steven Reinprecht has exploded offensively. The bad news: Steven Reinprecht is the only Panther who has exploded offensively.

30. Carolina Hurricanes (no movement)
Record: 2-11-3
Last Week: 0-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. LAK, vs. NYI)
Can it get any worse for the Canes? Off to their worst start in franchise history, Cam Ward is now expected to miss 3-4 weeks after suffering a laceration of the groin area Saturday vs. Columbus. It will now be up to Michael Leighton to backstop the Canes out of their 11-game losing streak.

In a way, Mrs. Crenshaw is like your other characters Princess Leia and Mystery Woman in “The Blues Brothers”: she faces the bad guys with humor and guts and blows them away (or tries to, anyway).
