Weekly NHL Power Rankings: March 22nd, 2010
In this week’s NHL Power Rankings, The San Jose Sharks fall out of the top five for the first time this season.
The Atlanta Thrashers — who looked out of the race one week ago — have surged to within a point of Boston’s final playoff spot.
In personal accolade news, Teemu Selanne scored his 600th goal on Sunday. (More on this below.)
The Tampa Bay Lightning were too uncomfortable not setting themselves up for another lottery pick, so they quickly reversed their fortunes with a brutal week.
The unlikely climb of the Phoenix Coyotes continues, as the Desert Dogs haven’t lost since the the trade deadline.
1. Washington Capitals (no movement)
Record: 48-14-10
Last Week: 2-0-1
With their division already neatly wrapped up, the Caps can revel somewhat in individual accomplishments, such as the seven players who have scored 20+ goals, a list which could grow to eight if Mike Green can manage three more this season.
2. Phoenix Coyotes (+2 spots)
Record: 46-22-5
Last Week: 4-0-0
The Coyotes have won nine straight games. Lee Stempniak shares the team lead with 23 goals, scoring 9 goals on 29 shots since his arrival in Phoenix. The Coyotes are tied with Chicago for the Western Conference lead.
3. Chicago Blackhawks (no movement)
Record: 45-19-7
Last Week: 1-1-1
As expected, the Hawks are stumbling slightly with their defense depleted by injuries, with just one win in their last five. Brent Sopel is logging over 20 minutes a game.
4. Vancouver Canucks (+1 spot)
Record: 44-24-4
Last Week: 1-1-1
Ryan Kesler has been locked up for six years at 5 million per season. Read more about the implications of the contract and how this deal may affect Cody Hodgson.
5. Pittsburgh Penguins (+1 spot)
Record: 42-24-6
Last Week: 2-1-1
The Pens picked up a couple of wins last week but lost their sixth game of the season to New Jersey. The Devils went 6-0 against their divisional adversaries this year, which should be concerning to the Pens who might be looking at the Devils as a second round playoff opponent.
6. New Jersey Devils (+1 spot)
Record: 42-25-4
Last Week: 2-1-1
No points in four games last week for Ilya Kovalchuk, giving him 12 in 16 games as a Devil.
7. San Jose Sharks (-5 spots)
Record: 43-19-10
Last Week: 0-4-0
Four straight losses and counting for the Sharks, who on Sunday night were surpassed for the Pacific Division lead. An 8-2 defeat at the hands of Dallas and a 5-1 loss to league-worst Edmonton sums up the disarray in San Jose.
8. Nashville Predators (+4 spots)
Record: 42-26-5
Last Week: 4-0-0
How have the Preds managed to win with the league’s 29th overall penalty kill? Perhaps it has something to do with taking the least penalties per game in the NHL.
9. Colorado Avalanche (-1 spot)
Record: 40-25-6
Last Week: 1-2-0
The Avs have mustered the fewest shots per game this season at 27.1, while giving up 32.2 per game. Their offense at 5-on-5 is fifth best in the league.
10. Los Angeles Kings (-1 spot)
Record: 41-24-5
Last Week: 1-1-0
The Kings firmly hold a playoff spot, thanks in part to stats like these: The Kings have not once lost when taking a lead into the third period.
MIDDLE 10
11. Buffalo Sabres (+2 spots)
Record: 39-22-10
Last Week: 3-1-0
Three wins in a row versus Southeast Division opponents, the Sabres lead their division, just 2 points behind Pittsburgh for second overall in the Conference.
12. Detroit Red Wings (-1 spot)
Record: 35-23-13
Last Week: 2-0-1
The Wings picked up an important two points in style on Saturday as Henrik Zetterberg notched the OT winner with no time left on the clock. Detroit narrowly hold the final playoff spot in the West with Calgary closely following.
13. Philadelphia Flyers (-3 spots)
Record: 37-30-5
Last Week: 1-2-1
Five games in eight days with one point to show for their efforts, the Flyers now hold a playoff spot by just four points, and are stumbling down the stretch with Brian Boucher in goal.
14. Montreal Canadiens (+1 spot)
Record: 36-29-7
Last Week: 1-0-1
Six straight wins for the Canadiens before losing in a shootout, the Habs are playing their best hockey of the season, with more good news on the way in the form of Michael Cammalleri’s return to the lineup on Monday. Cammalleri remains the team leader in goals (26), even after missing a number of weeks with an MCL injury.
15. Atlanta Thrashers (+11 spots)
Record: 32-29-11
Last Week: 4-0-0
After losing five straight, the Thrashers have recently won four straight, led by Nik Antropov who has 8 points in those four victories.
16. Ottawa Senators (-2 spots)
Record: 37-30-5
Last Week: 0-3-0
After surpassing the Sabres for the Northwest Division lead a while back, the Senators have recorded a single win in nine March games (and that win came against Edmonton so it doesn’t really count). Ottawa holds fifth spot in the east, but remain in the playoffs by a mere four points.
17. Boston Bruins (no movement)
Record: 32-27-12
Last Week: 2-2-0
The Bruins aren’t much of an offensive force anymore, so they seem to be content letting games move to the shootout, where they have won nine games (third best in the league). They hold 8th place by a single point.
18. Calgary Flames (-2 spots)
Record: 36-27-9
Last Week: 2-2-0
Surprising regulation wins versus San Jose and Colorado last week were followed by a loss to the lowly Wild. Calgary is now two points out of 8th behind the Red Wings, who they won’t play again this season.
19. Anaheim Ducks (+1 spot)
Record: 34-29-8
Last Week: 3-0-0
Teemu Selanne is the third European and 18th player to join the 600 goal club. He scored his 600th on Sunday, 18 years after scoring his first ever NHL goal on Sharks goaltender Jeff Hackett. Teemu’s Ducks are seven points out of the playoffs and will be challenged to make it, despite winning four games last week.
20. St. Louis Blues (-2 spots)
Record: 34-29-9
Last Week: 2-2-0
Forget the fact that St. Louis is not entirely out of the playoff picture and watch this three-minute fight between Cam Janssen and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond.
BOTTOM 10
21. Minnesota Wild (-2 spots)
Record: 35-31-6
Last Week: 2-2-0
6 points in 12 games for the Wild puts game Barker back to his familiar 40-point pace after scoring 14 points in 51 games with Chicago.
22. Dallas Stars (+3 spots)
Record: 31-27-14
Last Week: 2-1-1
The Stars picked 8th last year in the draft, and would be picking 10th this year if the season ended today. They’ve lost 14 games in extra time which leads the league. Even if they had lost only 10 to this point they would be within 3 points of a playoff spot.
23. New York Rangers (-2 spots)
Record: 31-32-9
Last Week: 0-3-0
Three tough losses last week have the Rangers frustrated and trailing Boston by five points.
24. Carolina Hurricanes (no movement)
Record: 30-34-8
Last Week: 2-2-0
‘Staal and Hall’ certainly sounds appealing to Canes fans, but the more likely combo after this season will be ‘Staal and Gormley’ or ‘Staal and Kabanov’.
25. Toronto Maple Leafs (+2 spots)
Record: 26-34-12
Last Week: 3-0-0
Now 7-2-1 since the trade deadline, it appears the young Leafs are now fighting for both jobs and a lower draft choice for the Boston Bruins. There’s lots of positive talk surrounding Nikolai Kulemin, who has 11 points in 10 games since the trade deadline.
26. Florida Panthers (-2 spots)
Record: 29-31-11
Last Week: 1-2-1
This week will more or less decide if the Panthers finish closer to a lottery pick or the playoffs, as they sit in 11th place, one point out of 14th and two points out of 10th.
27. Tampa Bay Lightning (-4 spots)
Record: 28-32-12
Last Week: 0-4-0
Losers of five straight, Tampa now sits in Cam Fowler-ith overall in the league. They picked 1st overall in 2008, 2nd overall last year, and are now in position to pick 3rd.
28. New York Islanders (no movement)
Record: 29-33-10
Last Week: 1-1-1
Wednesday’s game at Madison Square Garden will be broadcast on MSG in 3-D, the first ever NHL broadcast of its kind. Unfortunately, Madison Square Garden is perhaps the least aesthetically pleasing arena in the NHL and it renders terribly on television.
29. Columbus Blue Jackets (no movement)
Record: 29-31-12
Last Week: 1-2-1
Scrutinize this roster all you’d like, but Steve Mason’s .898 save percentage is the most telling statistic when it comes to the disappointment in Columbus, who will likely finish the season 14th in the West.
30. Edmonton Oilers (no movement)
Record: 23-42-7
Last Week: 2-2-0
With a league-worst goal differential of minus-64, Dustin Penner has managed a plus-5 rating. He’s slowed offensively since an early-season surge, but a 27-goal, 55 point season thus far is a nice building block for Pat Quinn’s Oilers.

yes, and its actually not very hard because you can use the boot camp bootloader instead of setting up rEFIt. use the boot camp utility to partition your hard drive into two partitions, one for mac os x and one for windows. when it asks you to put in the cd and reboot, don’t. then open up disk utility and shrink down your mac os x partition so that there is free space between the os x partition and the windows partition. it is important that it goes there, as boot camp expects windows to be the last partition. then put in your windows install cd, reboot, and hold “C” when it turns back on. the windows installer will restart at different points during the installation (once after copying files and once after the final install). every time windows setup reboots your computer, hold the “alt” key as the computer turns on and select your Windows partition (not the windows cd) from the menu that appears. when windows is set up, install the boot camp drivers on your mac os x install disc as per above and then restart into mac os x (do this by holding “alt” at boot and choosing mac os x). then go back into disc utility and create a “MS-DOS (FAT)” partition in the free space, and you should be good to go!
