Weekly NHL Power Rankings: January 4th, 2010
Click here to check out last week’s rankings.
A new calendar year is upon us, and the Winter Classic has come and gone. The Boston Bruins squeaked out a win on New Year’s Day, avoiding what could have been an embarrassing 1-0 loss on a Tim Thomas blunder.
Around the league, the NHL’s hottest team takes first place in our rankings after an 8-game winning streak.
The High-Risers of the week: Calgary Flames, Nashville Predators, Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning
The Free-Falls of the week: Pittsburgh Penguins, Phoenix Coyotes, Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins

Record: 29-10-3
Last Week: 3-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. MIN, @ BOS, @ MIN)
The Blackhawks are currently tied for the lead league in points with the Sharks at 61. They barely lose the top spot this week after losing a tight one to the Dallas Stars
3. New Jersey Devils (+1 spot)
Record: 29-10-1
Last Week: 3-1-0

5. Calgary Flames (+8 spots)
Record: 24-12-5
Last Week: 4-0-0
Games This Week: (@ NAS, @ MIN, vs. CLB, @ VAN)

6. Nashville Predators (+6 spots)
Record: 25-14-3
Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. CGY, vs. CAR, vs. ANA)
Nashville refuses to slow down, but are still a team that flies under the radar. The Preds have won 9 of their last 13 games and have recently seen top defensemen Shea Weber and Ryan Suter named to the Olympics.
7. Washington Capitals (-4 spots)
Record: 24-8-6
Last Week: 0-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. MTL, vs. OTT, @ ATL)
The Capitals lost some leadership last week by trading away captain Chris Clark, and it showed. Since Clark’s departure the Caps have lost all three contests. Maybe they need a captain?
8. Colorado Avalanche (-1 spot)
Record: 24-13-6
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. NYI, @ CAR, @ BUF)
Avs rookie Matt Duchene will face John Tavares in a showdown of the two highest drafted forwards in last year’s entry draft. The two snipers are in very different scenarios; the Avalanche are at the top of the Northwest Division and in a solid playoff position, while the Isles are tied for 9th in the East and face an uphill battle towards the post-season.
9. Vancouver Canucks (no movement)
Record: 25-16-1
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (vs. CLB, vs. PHX, vs. CGY)

10. Pittsburgh Penguins (-5 spots)
Record: 26-15-1
Last Week: 0-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. ATL, vs. PHI, @ TOR)
The Pens are currently on a five-game losing streak, one that includes losses to the Leafs, Lightning and Panthers. Mario Lemieux attended a grueling 90-minute practice on Monday, an indication that the Pens need to step it up.
MIDDLE 10
11. Phoenix Coyotes (-5 spots)
Record: 24-14-4
Last Week: 0-1-2
Games This Week: (@ EDM, @ VAN, vs. NYI)
Many Canadians were shocked when Coyotes captain Shane Doan was left of the Olympic Roster last week. Doan is a picture of consistency, having scored 20 goals or more in 9 consecutive seasons.
12. Detroit Red Wings (+2 spots)
Record: 21-14-6
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (@ ANA, @ LA, @ SJ)
Todd Bertuzzi sits second on the team in goals with 12, behind Tomas Holmstrom who has 15. Zetterberg and Datsyuk are tied in third with 10 apiece. Who predicted that one?
13. Los Angeles Kings (-2 spots)
Record: 25-15-3
Last Week: 3-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. DET, vs. STL)
If the NHL playoffs started tomorrow, the Kings would hold the seventh seed in the Western Conference. If LA can stay in a playoff position through the second half of the season, they will make the post-season for the first time since 2001-02.
14. Boston Bruins (-4 spots)
Record: 21-13-7
Last Week: 2-2-0
Games This Week: (@ NYR, @ OTT, vs. CHI, vs. NYR)

Record: 18-12-11
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ NJ, @ NYR, vs. NYI)
Brad Richards was skipped over when Canada announced its Olympic roster earlier this week, despite having posted 37 assists and 48 points in 39 games played.
17. Montreal Canadiens (+3 spots)
Record: 21-20-3
Last Week: 2-2-0
Games This Week: (@ WAS, vs. FLA, vs. NJ)
The Canadiens’ powerplay is tops in the league right now, chugging along at a healthy 24.8%. It is no coincidence that their PP has vastly improved since Andrei Markov returned to the lineup.
18. New York Rangers (+3 spots)
Record: 20-17-5
Last Week: 2-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. BOS, vs. DAL, @ ATL, @ BOS)

Last Week: 1-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. TOR, @ PIT, vs. TB)
Captain Mike Richards and Chris Pronger were named to the Canadian Olympic team this week, while former 40 goal scorer Jeff Carter was skipped over. Perhaps this will light a fire under Carter, who has not played to his potential in the first half of the season.
20. Minnesota Wild (-5 spots)
Record: 20-19-3
Last Week: 1-3-0
Games This Week: (@ CHI, vs. CGY, vs. CHI)
Martin Havlat has been heating up offensively as of late, but he is still a team-worst minus-12. Old man Nolan is on pace to hit 20 goals for the tenth time in his career.
BOTTOM 10
21. Atlanta Thrashers (-2 spots)
Record: 18-17-6
Last Week: 0-2-2
Games This Week: (@ PIT, vs. NYR, vs. WAS)
Here’s a stat that proves Atlanta would be lost without Andrej Pavelec and Johan Hedberg: The Thrashers have been outshout in 17 of their 18 wins this season.
22. New York Islanders (+3 spots)
Record: 17-18-8
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (@ COL, @ DAL, @ PHX)
Captain Doug Weight is the only Isles regular without a goal this season. In 13 games played, he has 7 assists. If Weight can heat up down the stretch, it will be interesting to see if he gets dealt at the deadline for the 3rd consecutive season.
23. Tampa Bay Lightning (+4 spots)
Record: 16-15-10
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (@ BUF, @ NJ, @ PHI)
Key players in the 2006 Olympics, Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier were left off of Canada’s 2010 Olympic selections. Stastically they don’t look too shabby as they’ve combined for 83 points in 82 games.

Games This Week: (vs. DET, vs. STL, @ NAS)

26. Florida Panthers (no movement)
Record: 17-18-7
Last Week: 1-1-0
Games This Week: (@ TOR, @ MTL, @ OTT)
The Panthers kicked off 2010 in style with a 6-2 over the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon, ending a three-game losing streak. The Cats play all three Eastern Canadian teams this week.
27. Toronto Maple Leafs (-3 spots)
Record: 14-19-9
Last Week: 0-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. FLA, @ PHI, @ BUF, vs. PIT)
On Sunday it was announced that Mikhail Grabovski will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken wrist and Wayne Primeau will miss 2-4 weeks with a knee injury. John Mitchell recently returned to the lineup, and he will fill in as the number 2 pivot, while regular health scratch Rickard Wallin will look for his first goal as Leaf as the centre on the third line.
28. Columbus Blue Jackets (no movement)
Record: 15-19-9
Last Week: 1-1-2
Games This Week: (@ VAN, @ EDM, @ CGY)

Last Week: 1-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. PHX, vs. CLB)
Edmonton Oilers prospect Jordan Eberle is on fire at the World Juniors Tournament in Saskatoon, putting up 6 goals and 5 assists in four games played. 30. Carolina Hurricanes (no movement)
Record: 11-23-7
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ NAS, @ COL)
Every single player on the Carolina Hurricanes has a minus rating at the half-way point in the season, except for Tom Kostopoulos, who has an even rating. Rod Brind’Amour, who normally has impressive defensive numbers, is a team and league-worst minus-23.
