Weekly NHL Power Rankings: January 25th 2010
The Sharks and Blackhawks swap places in the 1 and 2 spots this week, as the Sharks won all four of their games and the Hawks looked ordinary against the Canucks.
Two teams who can’t buy a goal — the Bruins and Flames — take a long tumble down the rankings. Both Daryl Sutter and Peter Chiarelli should be keeping an ear open (which physically should be quite easy for Sutter) to trade offers, as both of these clubs need scoring help.
The Panthers are another team who can’t score, but Tomas Vokoun has won them games single-handedly, Bryan McCabe’s team is within reach of 8th place in the East.
By next week, more teams should have an indication of their stance at the March 3rd trade deadline.
1. San Jose Sharks (+1 spot)
Record: 35-10-8
Last Week: 4-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. CHI, vs. MIN)
34-year-old Evgeni Nabokov looks as good as ever in goal, and he will be looking for a fat contract when the season is up. With several key regulars to sign, Doug Wilson will have some challenging roster juggling to do.
2. Chicago Blackhawks (-1 spot)
Record: 35-13-4
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (@ EDM, @ SJS, @ CAR)
Having been called the ‘best team the league’ numerous times in the past few weeks, the Hawks were handled quite easily by an impressive Canucks team in a 5-1 loss on Saturday night.
3. Washington Capitals (no movement)
Record: 33-12-6
Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (@ NYI, vs. ANA, vs. FLA, vs. TB)
Beyond Mike Green and his 50 points, Tom Poti has 16, which supports the theory that Washington needs to acquire an offensive rearguard at the deadline.
4. New Jersey Devils (no movement)
Record: 34-15-1
Last Week: 2-2-0
Games This Week: (@ OTT, @ BUF, vs. TOR)
Patrick Elias could make history this season. Elias is tied with Jaromir Jagr, Mats Sundin and Sergei Fedorov, sharing the record for most career regular season overtime goals with 15 each.
5. Vancouver Canucks (+3 spots)
Record: 31-18-2
Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. BUF, vs. STL, @ TOR)
If you’re one of the many who don’t understand the dominance of the Canucks, look no further than Henrik and Daniel Sedin’s point-per-game output — they sit 2nd and 3rd in the league respectively, behind only Alex Ovechkin.
6. Buffalo Sabres (-1 spot)
Record: 30-13-7
Last Week: 1-2-1
Games This Week: (@ VAN, vs. NJD, vs. BOS)
As long as Buffalo continues to overachieve and lead their division, the relatively unproductive seasons of Pominville, Roy and Vanek don’t seem to matter a whole lot to Sabres fans.
7. Colorado Avalanche (no movement)

Last Week: 3-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. MIN, @ DAL, vs. NYR)
Matt Duchene has suddenly become a serious contender for the Calder trophy, now leading all rookies in scoring. Another factor on Duchene’s side is the standing of his Avalanche team (leading Northwest Division) and his importance to their overall success.
8. Pittsburgh Penguins (+1 spot)
Record: 32-20-1
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ NYR, vs. OTT, vs. DET)
The Penguins will likely once again add a winger or two at the deadline, as Ray Whitney is strongly rumoured to be on his way to Pittsburgh in the near future. This strategy worked for the Penguins last year and the year previous, but sooner or later all of the prospects and picks traded for rental players will leave the cupboards bare in Pittsburgh.
9. Phoenix Coyotes (+1 spot)
Record: 29-18-5
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. BUF, vs. NSH, @ WSH)
15 of the 20 poorest attended single regular season games this year belong to the Coyotes and the citizens of Glendale.
10. Ottawa Senators (+5 spots)
Record: 28-21-4
Last Week: 4-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. NJD, @ PIT, vs. MON)
Jason Spezza’s game-winning goal in his return from injury was just more good news for this Sens team who have now won 6 straight and are creeping up on Buffalo for the division lead.
MIDDLE 10
11. Nashville Predators (-5 spots)
Record: 29-19-3
Last Week: 0-3-0
Games This Week: (@ CBJ, @ DET, vs. ATL)
A not-so-magical week for Nashville, losing to the Leafs, Coyotes and Avalanche — this coming off a week in which the Preds won three games on the road against Western Canadian foes.
12. Los Angeles Kings (no movement)
Record: 29-19-3
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. SJS, vs. BUF, @ DET)
The Kings are 10 games over .500, but are only in the playoffs by three points = Life in the Western Conference.
13. Philadelphia Flyers (+3 spots)
Record: 26-22-3
Last Week: 3-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. ATL, vs. NYI)
With 37 points and +20 rating, Chris Pronger is setting himself up for a Norris nomination. In other news, Daniel Carcillo beat up Marian Gaborik, proving that not only can he conribute next to nothing offensively, but he can also physically dominate players who don’t fight.
14. Detroit Red Wings (-1 spot)
Record: 25-18-8
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (vs. PHX, @ MIN, vs. NSH, @ PIT)
Pittsburgh Penguins commentator Mike Lange sometimes says, “He beat him like a rented mule.” It looks like Pavel Datsyuk could use a rented mule in the absence of Johan Franzen, as the skilled Russian forward has scored only 37 points this season after scoring 97 in each of the last two seasons.
15. Anaheim Ducks (+9 spots)
Record: 24-21-7
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ ATL, @ WSH, @ TB)
Bobby Ryan has really turned it on, increasing his goal total to 24 which leads the team. If the Ducks lose any ground in the Western Conference in the coming weeks, expect Scott Niedermayer’s name to enter trade discussions.
16. Minnesota Wild (+1 spot)

Last Week: 1-1-1
Games This Week: (@ DAL, vs. DET, vs. CLB)
Wild call-up Robbie Earl has 5 goals in 15 games averaging under 8 minutes of ice time, with a shooting percentage of 41.2%.
17. New York Rangers (+1 spots)

The Rangers began last week with a couple of victories, but most recently have been shut out in back-to-back games. Additionally, John Tortorella provided highlight shows with another media scrum gem.

Mike Cammalleri’s 26 goals through 53 games are exactly what Bob Gainey expected when he shelled out 30 million over 5 years for the winger’s services.

Losers of five straight games, the Flames aren’t looking like contenders anymore, which has resulted in a flurry of trade rumours — most of which involve Dion Phaneuf in exchange for some scoring punch.

Seeing as no Boston winger has yet amassed 30-points, Peter Chiarelli should be making some serious offers to Don Waddel regarding Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Islanders are surprisingly only one point removed from a playoff spot, which makes you wonder if Garth Snow will be a buyer for the first time in a few years come March 3rd.
22. Dallas Stars (-1 spot)

After being handsomely rewarded with a lucrative contract extension, Swedish Olympian Loui Eriksson has lived up to his end of the bargain, with 48 points in 52 games.
23. Florida Panthers (+2 spots)
Record: 22-21-9
Last Week: 2-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. MTL, @ WSH, vs. NYI)
The Panthers sit only 2 points out of a playoff spot, and appear to be surviving without Jay Bouwmeester. Nathan Horton will remain out of the lineup for a few more weeks, so a lot will be determined about the Panthers’ season by the time he comes off the IR.
24. Atlanta Thrashers (-4 spots)

Ilya Kovalchuk blah blah blah Ilya Kovalchuk yada yada yada… But seriously, the Thrashers are only three points out of 8th place, yet the talk of the league remains on the deadline status of their best player. Perhaps Kovie doesn’t move at all?
25. Tampa Bay Lightning (+1 spots)

The Lightning actually went to the media to shoot down Vinny Lecavalier trade rumours (again), but now may be the best time to rid themselves of Vincent and the remaining nine years of his contract.
26. St. Louis Blues (-3 spots)

Games This Week: (@ CGY, @ VAN, @ EDM, vs. CBJ)
If the Blues don’t gain any ground between now and the trade deadline, expect Paul Kariya and Keith Tkachuk to be on the move to contending teams.
27. Columbus Blue Jackets (no movement)

Was last season actually a step forward for the Blue Jackets franchise or did Steve Mason’s magical rookie season cover up the Blue Jackets’ overall lack of depth? Mason’s .891 save percentage and 3.30 goals against average are beyond horrible.

ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun recently reported that Leaf management is entering the trade deadline with a unique angle, as they are willing to accept unwanted contracts provided they receive a high draft pick in the deal. In addition, offers have already come across the table for Alexei Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan and others.

The Oilers are finally in last place overall in the NHL, which may lead to Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle suiting up next fall for the club. Heart failure?? i was sure of that and also sure that the HF was related to the rash and voice change,,, after a long tiring journey of investigations finally primary Amyloidosis was diagnosed,,, a diagnosis that shocked every one,, me and all the drs here in Jordan who denied ever seeing a case of primary amyloidosis before… my dear stephen, with you i ride each month to another country (Lebanon) in orded to follow up my fathers case,,, when he was first diagnosed he couldn`t sleep or even walk a short distance… Now he is almost back to normal,,, i a remission state… and from here i say that it wasn`t the drugs that cured him with all my respect to my proffesion, it was our love to him, the look he saw daily in our eyes as we prayed for God to make him stay with us longer,,, and there he is now as strong as he has always been… making us as proud of him as we always were… stephen, your love to your mum will cure her, your prayers and the ultimate faith that she will be cured and that you are sure she is going to be there for you forever,, i will love my father enough to make him attend my graduation from medical school next year, and i will love him enough to live and see me a great dr, whom he will be proud of… Ruba Refai .amman, HKJ you made us proud
