We’re about two months into the season and there have been a lot of interesting storylines.
In Philadelphia, John Stevens is out. Peter Laviolette is in. But the Flyers continue to struggle.
The Wild are making a strong push, reeling off 5 in a row, to bring themselves within 5 points of a playoff spot.

1. Washington Capitals (+5 spots)

The Caps rocket to the top of the rankings with two dominant performances to close out the week. Without Ovie (suspended 2 games for this careless cheapshot) the Capitals proceeded to score 14 goals in those 2 games, thanks to a dominant Nicklas Backstrom (9 pts last week).
2. Chicago Blackhawks (-1 spot)
Record: 18-7-3
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. NYR, @ BUF, vs. TB)
Marian Hossa is living up to his billing, scoring at a point-per-game pace, but that hasn’t translated into dominant play for the Blackhawks. Chicago is playing .500 hockey with the Slovakian sniper in the lineup.
3. Pittsburgh Penguins (+1 spot)
Record: 20-9-1
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (vs. CAR, @ MTL, vs. FLA)
A dream matchup against the Blackhawks lost its lustre when Sid the Kid sat out due to injury, but the Pens fought hard to earn a point in their OT loss thanks to poor late game defensive coverage by Chicago.
4. Calgary Flames (+1 spot)
Record: 18-7-3
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ LA, vs. ATL, vs. MIN, @ COL)
For anyone who doubted how the defensive stalwarts of the Flames would be able to handle the best line in the NHL, Saturday night’s game in San Jose proved that the Flames are a force to be reckoned with. Heater, Thorts and Marley were held pointless and had a grand total of 9 shots for the game.
5. San Jose Sharks (-3 spots)
Record: 19-7-5
Last Week: 1-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. LA, vs. DAL, @ PHX)
Most will attribute San Jose’s success to newcomer Dany Heatley, but the real catalyst is Joe Thornton, who is on pace to top the 100 point plateau for the first time since his 114 point campaign in 06-07.
6. New Jersey Devils (-3 spots)
Record: 19-7-1
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ BUF, vs. CAR, vs. FLA, vs. PHI)
With the Olympics a mere 2 months away, the race for the starting job for Team Canada seems to be a two horse race between Roberto Luongo and Martin Brodeur. We’re putting our money on Marty thanks to his stellar play this season (17-7-1, 2.20 GAA, .920 SV%)
7. Phoenix Coyotes (+12 spots)
Record: 17-11-1
Last Week: 2-0-0
Games This Week: (vs. MIN, @ LA, vs. SJS)
The Yotes extended their win streak to 4 and continued to play at a level that no sports pundit could predict at the start of the season. The root of their success is in their defence. An unlikely core of Jovo Cop, Adrian Aucoin, Keith Yandle, and David Schlemko (yes… David Schlemko) has led Phoenix to the 3rd best GA per game in the league.
8. Buffalo Sabres (+8 spots)
Record: 16-8-2
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. NJD, vs. WSH, vs. CHI, @ NYR)
One key to the terrific start to the season by the Sabres has been their dominance over Western Conference opponents. The only team with an unblemished record against the West, their perfect 5-0-0 mark has seen them skate circles around their counterparts, scoring 14 goals and allowing only 5 in total in those games.
9. Atlanta Thrashers (+5 spots)
Record: 15-8-3
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ TOR, @ CGY, @ VAN, vs. MTL)
Pavel Kubina currently leads all NHL D-men with a +16 rating. This is the same Pavel Kubina who has never ended a season with a +10 or higher, and has a cumulative -86 for his career.
10. Colorado Avalanche (-1 spot)
Record: 16-9-6
Last Week: 2-1-1
Games This Week: (@ STL, vs. MIN, vs. TB, vs. CGY)
Even with their fast start now long forgotten, the Avs continue to hold the 4th seed in the West. Paul Stastny has quietly recorded 31 points to lead the team.
MIDDLE 10
11. Los Angeles Kings (+6 spots)
Record: 17-10-3
Last Week: 2-0-1
Games This Week: (vs. CGY, @ SJS, vs. PHX, vs. DAL)
Los Angeles, who sit just 6 points behind the league-leading Sharks, have a lot of faith in 23 year old netminder Jon Quick, starting him in 28 of 30 games so far.
12. Boston Bruins (+1 spot)
Record: 15-9-5
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. TOR, @ NYI)
The B’s had an extremely eventful and bipolar week. On Friday, they were embarrassed by the Habs during Montreal’s Centennial celebration, and less than 24 hours later they blew out the Leafs 7-2 in Phil The Thrill’s return to Beantown.
13. Nashville Predators (-2 spots)
Record: 16-11-2
Last Week: 1-2-1
Games This Week: (vs. VAN, vs. CLB, vs. DET)
There is a youth movement taking place on the Preds’ defence this year: Ryan Suter, Shea Weber, Kevin Klein, and Cody Franson are all under 25, while old man Francois Bouillon, who is 34, feels left out.
14. Detroit Red Wings (+4 spots)
Record: 14-10-5
Last Week: 2-1-1
Games This Week: (vs. STL, vs. ANA, @ NSH)
For years Red Wings players have crowded the leaderboards for +/-, but so far this year not one Wing is +10 or higher. Pavel Datsyuk has struggled to find his form so far, with only 6 goals in 26 games.
15. Dallas Stars (-4 spots)

Last Week: 1-1-1
Games This Week: (@ ANA, @ SJS, @ LA)
Who knows where Dallas would be right now without Brad Richards. His phenomenal play so far stirs flashbacks of his integral role in Tampa Bay’s Cup in ‘04. His poise and skill will transfer greatly to Olympic play if he is picked for Team Canada.
16. Vancouver Canucks (+5 spots)
Record: 16-13-0
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (@ NSH, vs. ATL, vs. MIN)
After two promising wins mid-week, Vancouver fell to the lowly Canes on Saturday. The Canucks’ chances at winning the Cup will be hindered if they continue the trend of playing down to their opponents’ level.
17. Tampa Bay Lightning (-9 spots)
Record: 11-9-8
Last Week: 1-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. WSH, vs. EDM, @ COL, @ CHI)
Tampa Bay haven’t been great, but Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone have been carrying the struggling Bolts with their 17 and 16 goals respectively. After them the next leading scorer is Lecavalier with only 6 goals.
18. Ottawa Senators (-6 spots)
Record: 14-10-4
Last Week: 1-3-0
Games This Week: (vs. MTL, @ PHI, vs. CAR)
The Sens’ hope for revenge against Dany Heatley in San Jose last week didn’t go as planned. Instead it set the tone for a terrible week where they lost 3 of 4. Pascal Leclaire can’t come back soon enough, as Brian Elliott has been below average.
19. St. Louis Blues (+3 spots)
Record: 12-10-5
Last Week: 2-1-0
Games This Week: (vs. COL, @ DET, vs. EDM)
Patrick Berglund is feeling the sophmore blues in St.Louis, recording only 6 points in 23 games this year. Andy Murray has him in the doghouse, sitting him out on more than one occasion this season.
20. Philadelphia Flyers (-10 spots)

Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (@ MTL, vs. NYI, vs. OTT, @ NJD)
Peter Laviolette probably thought he caught a break when his first game as Flyers coach was against an Ovechkin-less Caps team. His team didn’t seize the opportunity and got embarrassed 8-2 on home ice.
BOTTOM 10
21. Minnesota Wild (+6 spots)

The Wild have been, well running wild lately, winning 5 in a row. Mikko Koivu’s strong play has overshadowed Martin Havlat’s poor play and horrendous -17 rating.
22. Columbus Blue Jackets (-5 spots)
Record: 13-11-5
Last Week: 1-2-1
Games This Week: (vs. FLA, @ NSH, vs. ANA)
Columbus is lucky to be above .500, seeing as they have allowed the most goals in the entire league. Anton Stralman’s powerplay contributions have been embraced, but his defensive deficincies are glaring, as he is a -10.
23. New York Rangers (no movement)
Record: 14-14-1
Last Week: 1-2-0
Games This Week: (@ CHI, vs. BUF)
The New York Rangers might as well be called the Marian Gaboriks as he is the only one doing anything on this team: 15 more goals and 12 more points than any other teammate.
24. New York Islanders (+1 spot)
Record: 11-11-7
Last Week: 1-1-0
Games This Week: (@ PHI, @ TOR, vs. BOS)
Is Matt Moulson the next Henrik Zetterberg? or Pavel Datsyuk? Probably not, but like Zetterberg and Datsyuk he was taken very late in the draft, and now he’s flourishing. He recorded a natural hat trick this week over the Thrashers.
25. Montreal Canadiens (-1 spot)

The Canadiens saved their Alumni-laden Centennial celebration for the Boston Bruins, who decided to save their energy for Phil Kessel and the Leafs. Mike Cammalleri scored a hat trick to cap off 100 years of Habs hockey.
26. Edmonton Oilers (+3 spots)

With 7 regulars on the injured reserve, Pat Quinn can’t expect much out of his team, but they’ve fought hard, winning 2 in a row on the road.

After having a decent week, the Ducks fall into oblivion again, going winless in their last 5. Both Jonas Hiller and J.S. Giguere have been given a chance, but neither has played well enough to help their team to a win.

It was Kessel-Mania in Leafs Nation after a 6-3 drubbing of Columbus, where he was 1 assist away from a Gordie Howe hat trick. After being blown out in Boston, the Leafs have a chance at redemption when they take on the Bruins Thursday.
29. Florida Panthers (-3 spots)

The Panthers reached a new level of embarrassment when Keith Ballard inadvertently slashed Tomas Vokoun in the face. Unbeknownst to all, moments before the game, Vokoun had bet Ballard a large sum that Kovalchuk would score. Underestimating Vokoun’s large influence on goals being scored by the other team, Ballard took the bet… and lost.
