(Timeline of) The Travelin’ Man: Mike Sillinger
There’s an old expression that goes, “If you love something, let it go. If it comes back, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it never was…”. By this adage, Mike Sillinger was a well-loved man. But of course, he never truly belonged to anyone.
After 17 NHL seasons, Mike Sillinger has announced his plans to retire from the NHL, thus ending a career in which he became known as the ultimate journeyman hockey player. Having been traded nine separate times and playing for a total 12 NHL teams (both are NHL records), his status is legendary. Hockeycentric takes a look back at the career of the ultimate journeyman.
Detroit Red Wings
After a strong season with the Regina Pats of the WHL that saw him net 53 goals and 131 points, the Red Wings made Sillinger their first round pick in the 1989 entry draft, selecting him 11th overall. Mike would play a total of 129 games over the next three seasons with the Red Wings, playing on a very talented squad. After playing only 13 games of the shortened 1994-95 NHL season with Detroit, he was traded to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
Mike Sillinger would play the rest of the 1994-95 season with the Mighty Ducks, and the majority of the 1995-96 season, recording 41 points in 77 games. At the 1995-96 trade deadline he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Roman Oksiuta.
Vancouver Canucks
Sillinger played only one full season with the Canucks, putting up 37 points, before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers midway through the 1997-98 season for a fifth-round pick in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
Philadelphia Flyers
To close out the 1997-98 season, Sillinger scored an impressive 11 goals and 22 points in 27 games. However, he struggled in the first quarter of the 1998-99 season, and was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning with Chris Gratton in exchange for Daymond Langkow and Mikael Renberg (which would briefly reunite the Legion of Doom).
Tampa Bay Lightning
After struggling at the beginning of the season with the Flyers, Sillinger returned to form in Tampa, scoring 44 points in 67 games. However, this increased his trade value and he was dealt to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Ryan Johnson and Dwayne Hay on March 14, 2000.
Florida Panthers
After playing the remainder of the 1999-2000 season with the Panthers, Sillinger returned for the 2000-2001 season and recorded 34 points in 55 games before being traded at the deadline to the Ottawa Senators. This would mark his sixth trade in seven seasons.
Ottawa Senators
Sillinger would play 13 games with the Sens to close out the season, but became a free agent on July 1st, 2001.
Columbus Blue Jackets
For the first time in his career, Sillinger signed a contract as a free agent. He would play two full seasons for the Blue Jackets, recording back-to-back 43 point campaigns. Following his second season with the Jackets, Sillinger was traded twice in one day. On July 22nd, he was sent to the Dallas Stars with a second round draft pick in 2004 (Johan Fransson) for Darryl Sydor. Later that day, he was dealt from Dallas to the Phoenix Coyotes for defenceman Teppo Numminen.
Phoenix Coyotes
After putting up only 14 points in 60 games for the Coyotes, Sillinger was dealt at the trade deadline to the St. Louis Blues for goaltender Brent Johnson.
St. Louis Blues
After finishing the 2003-04 season with the Blues, Sillinger would be inactive during the 2004-05 NHL lockout. He had a great start to the 2005-06 season, scoring 41 points in 48 games. This led to his departure at the trade deadline to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Timofei Shishkanov on January 30, 2006. With this trade to the Preds, Sillinger set an NHL record for number of teams played for, with 11, but he wasn’t done yet…
Nashville Predators
By the end of the 2005-06 season, Sillinger would record a career best 63 points between the St. Louis Blues and the Nashville Predators. On July 1st, 2006, he once again became an unrestricted free agent.
New York Islanders
During the off-season, Sillinger would join his 12th and final NHL team, the New York Islanders. He did very well in his first season, picking up where he left off in 2006 and recording a career-high 59 points in the 2006-07 season. By helping New York to the post-season, he set another NHL record by competing in the playoffs for his eighth NHL team. He played his 1,000 game on November 1, 2007. However, his season was cut short due to a hip injury that required surgery. He would finish the season with 26 points in 52 games. He would play only 7 games for the Isles in 2008-09 before his lingering hip problems would force him to miss the rest of the season. This is the injury that would eventually lead to his retirement.
