Questions Linger After Auger/Burrows Verdict
It’s what those of us in the business of making puns refer to as, “The Auger Trial”.
According to the NHL, the trial is over. While the case is officially closed, the hockey world isn’t satisfied.
To put it plainly, Auger is very fortunate that his intent can’t be proven. If he does face consequences as a result of the Burrows incident, they won’t be revealed until some time down the road, beginning with the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Does anyone believe that Alex Burrows is such a skillful actor, that he can deliver an impassioned, Oscar-worthy monologue while riding the bike in a post-game media scrum? Would he not have considered the potential complications that could arise by calling out a respected official? It’s difficult to fake the way Burrows was speaking to the media. The man was on the verge of tears. It’s hard not to believe him. There have been some fantastic liars in sports over the years, but Alex Burrows looked more like a french kid who was ratting out his big brother for breaking his favourite toy. If his public tirade against Auger was a performance, it was a flawless one.
Some folks assert that Burrows reveals his lie by the fact that no other Canuck has come forward to support him. Because wouldn’t it make sense for an incensed Burrows to immediately vent the situation for his teammates after being told the fix was in? Not necessarily. Perhaps Burrows thought better of it, seeing as the idea of telling your coach and teammates that the fix is in might not be well-received. Believing that an official has it out for your team can linger in the back of a player’s mind and change his approach. Would it have been better for every Canuck to be second-guessing their aggression level in the corners because of a supposed vendetta held by an official? If Burrows told no one of his pre-game conversation with Auger, maybe it was because he realized that no official would spill the details of his sinister plot before executing it. Perhaps Burrows — like most other observers — would deem the idea of announcing a revenge call absolutely ludicrous.
The calls made by Auger were some of the most phantom infractions you’ll ever see in succession. Every official misses one from time to time, but these calls were so blatantly missed that it’s hard to not make an immediate connection between the calls and the supposed grudge held against Burrows. The Joel Ward interference call was a joke. It was Ward who tried to swim around Burrows, and Ward who lost his balance because of the attempted maneuver. The diving call was just as atrocious. In a way, Auger should be more embarrassed to have made those calls without a supposed ulterior motive. Anyone who saw the highlights now thinks of Auger as incompetent, crooked, or both. Expect him to yet again officiate zero playoff games this Spring.
What does the $2500 fine laid against Burrows say about the NHL’s stance on the incident? Burrows made extreme statements against a respected official, endorsing a suspension for Auger for disrespecting the Canucks and their fans. Had the NHL truly felt that Burrows was the only guilty party in the matter, the fine would have been severe, and it’s possible that a suspension would have followed.
Some folks discredit Burrows’ version of the events, simply because they paint Stephane Auger as entirely ignorant to the possible repercussions of his alleged actions. Would a professional referee really tip himself off before the game, opening himself up to a scandal? Can anyone reading this not admit to a personal slip up at some point in their life that rivals the stupidity of Auger’s alleged actions? Human beings make mistakes, especially in situations of high emotion. Clearly, Auger felt that Burrows made a fool of him and he was looking for redemption.
This scenario’s conclusion must be comforting for National Hockey League referees. If this incident tells us one thing, it’s that these officials are well protected. Though, anyone concerned with the integrity of the game should pay attention to the message the league’s verdict has sent to officials and players. Essentially, a few blown calls won’t result in a reprimand, and anything a ref chooses to say to a player is okay, as long as a third party isn’t around to hear it.
Supporters of Burrows won’t be satisfied until Auger comes forth and issues a statement explaining what was said prior to the game in question. Don’t wait around for this to happen, because it simply won’t. The NHL Officials Association will continue to protect Auger and keep a close eye on the matter.

We are positive about the future of our country and believe we all should take more responsibility to play our part in the future of our beautiful country. For too long have we sat back and complained about things (government) not going the way we like and criticizing! Apparently this judge has never watched a competition or the practices these kids go through. My daughter cheers and works very hard. They have many of the same issues as kids in other sports, but they have added responsibility in preventing injuries for other team mates. Certainly football, baseball, swimming, etc teams don’t want their teammates injured, but they aren’t throwing them in the air and catching them either. I hope this is overturned in the near future.
