Canada vs. USA
- Ryan Miller stole the show, Marty Brodeur was less than spectacular — the goaltending story essentially tells the tale of the American upset. Miller’s 43 saves translated to a .934 save percentage — a number he routinely posts with the Buffalo Sabres.
- The States didn’t find themselves with many offensive opportunities and were mostly outplayed, but they capitalized on the rare windows of attacking zone possession.
- The American defense kept the Canadian forwards to the perimeter very well, especially considering the lopsided amount of time Canada spent buzzing around American territory.
- Ryan Kesler’s empty-netter was spectacular. If you haven’t seen it, you will.
- This will be the last Olympic hockey game of Marty Brodeur’s storied career. He’s won a Gold medal, he’s won Stanley Cups, but his miscues against the Americans were costly. Once batting the puck up the middle, once lunging unnecessarily — both plays resulting in goals. His puck handling ability is well-documented, but what the Canadians need is a safe goaltender who can do a superb job at stopping the puck. Roberto Luongo will get the opportunity to lead the Canadians forward in the tournament.
- Did anyone expect Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith to be Canada’s two best defensemen? Look for Mike Babcock to increase the minutes of the aforementioned blueliners, while cutting back the ice time of Chris Pronger, who played a lazy, mistake-ridden game.
- Despite the loss, Canada’s ability to move the puck with tape-to-tape precision was prevalent in the second period, which saw stretches of video game-like pass completion. Such results arise when your entire roster possesses world-class vision, and when Jarome Iginla and Jonathan Toews are on your fourth line.
Sweden vs. Finland
- This game was pretty. Stylish, slick hockey at it’s finest.
- Henrik Lundqvist hasn’t allowed a single goal during this tournament. Jonas Gustavsson’s shaky performance against Belarus perhaps distracted the hockey world momentarily from Lundqvist’s excellence, but expect the talk leading up to Sweden’s next matchup to focus on goaltending.
- Was TSN’s Gord Miller on vacation when the Ilya Kovalchuk trade transpired? Miller said this during the Finland vs. Sweden broadcast: “Johnny Oduya, part of that no-name Devils’ defense in New Jersey.”
- Team Finland is still very much a contender in this tournament, despite the 3-0 loss to Sweden. Sweden is undeniably the more skilled team, but the Finns have a reliable powerplay and superb goaltending. Don’t count them out yet.

Hi Weasel – We have very similar taste, you and I. Many of your books are some of my past favorites, and you also list several that have grabbed my interest, but I haven’t read them yet. For instance, I keep meaning to read Deanna Raybourn’s Lady Julia Grey (am I remembering that correctly?). I think it would be perfect for me. I’m also glad to see someone else appreciated FATED. I was in HK last fall and tried to eat at Mak’s. I was told there was a constant line outside their Kowloon outlet. I was discouraged and had some roast goose at some nondescript cafe. I have since eaten at Mak’s in Richmond several times and have been happy with them. They are best known for their Cantonese yellow noodle, which as someone ad described, crisp and ‘crunchy’. I like their deep fried chicken knee. The other dishes are not unlike those found in congee and other good wonton noodle houses.
