Iginla Will Need Some Reinforcements In The Spring

Darryl Sutter acted swiftly and decisively as free agent season approached in 2009, as he swapped the expiring contract of Jordan Leopold along with a 3rd round pick for Jay Bouwmeester’s rights.

After locking up Jay-Bo for five years, the Flames’ GM had made his team significantly better, but strangely, he announced that his offseason shopping was complete, despite a glaring lack of depth up front.

Now over 20 games in to the 09-10 season, Calgary has indeed benefitted from Bouwmeester’s skill and poise on the back end, and as always, Jarome Iginla is carrying the load offensively.

The Flames currently lead the Northwest Division and may well hold that lead at season’s end. However, they lack the skill and depth up front to propel themselves into the Cup final.

Look at last year’s playoffs for historical comparisons:

The Anaheim Ducks and the Detroit Red Wings matched up in the West semifinal, Detroit eventually getting the better of the Ducks. Getzlaf, Ryan and Perry were at that point the hottest line in the NHL, as the trio had practically defeated the Sharks by themselves. The Ducks — much like this year’s Flames — were loaded on the back end, with Pronger, Niedermayer, Whitney, Beauchemin and Wisniewski all occupying spots on the Anaheim blueline.

So what became the difference in the series? Depth. Detroit could throw any of its top three lines over the boards as a threat to score, while the Ducks relied too heavily upon their top dogs.

Later, the East final saw Eric Staal and the Hurricanes severely outdueled by the Penguins. Depth (again) was the key to this series, as Pittsburgh’s two equally dangerous scoring lines were able to walk all over the Hurricanes. Perhaps if there were a second Eric Staal on Carolina, the series would have been closer.

Now, you can’t clone Jarome Iginla or expect to acquire a player of equal skill, but an effort must be made to give the captain some support.

Rene Bourque and Olli Jokinen are putting up some admirable numbers, but they won’t provide enough to share the burden with Jarome when the playoffs roll around.

Perhaps a deadline addition or two can push the Flames to the next level, but what impending free agents might be of interest to Darryl Sutter?

Clearly, every cup-hungry GM will put in a call about Ilya Kovalchuk if extension talks go south in Atlanta.

If the Ducks continue to flounder, how about Kiprusoff’s Team Finland teammate Teemu Selanne? How about Matt Cullen or Ray Whitney out of Carolina? Maybe Alexander Frolov could be had for a minimal cost?

Could Sutter be one of the 5 GM’s who have reportedly inquired as to Niklas Hagman’s availability?

What about veterans Petr Sykora or Owen Nolan out of Minnesota? How about current Islanders captain Doug Weight? He’d look like a natural in Calgary.

It’s unclear who Sutter might target, but he ought to keep his ‘Open for Business’ sign in clear view. Iginla will thank him for it.
