In this week’s Fantasy Focus, Marc-Andre Bergeron heats up, and Paul Kariya stays as cold as ice.

Meanwhile, John Tavares’ recent play has provided enough electricity to power 13 Long Island city blocks. If J.T. can open up this much space for Matt Moulson, watch out for the Isles once they acquire some more top line talent.

Several significant injury notes to pass your way — most notably Ryan Smyth, whose absence will undoubtedly affect breakout linemate Anze Kopitar.

WAIVER WATCH

For a guy on the 4th line of the New York Islanders, Richard Park has been playing well as of late. Four assists in his last 2 games should get him on one of the first 2 lines.

Brandon Sutter must have learned something from his father and five uncles that played in the NHL. He has 2 goals and 3 assists in his last 3 games. Hopefully he can keep it up on the atrocious Carolina Hurricanes.

Dan Cleary was a surprising choice to make it to the Team Canada training camp, but he is currently making his case for playing in the Olympic tournament. In his last 3 games he has 2 goals and 3 assists and is a +7.

DROP IT LIKE IT’S HOT

Taylor Pyatt
It doesn’t look like Pyatt is going to produce for the Coyotes this year. With only 1 goal and 1 assist through 15 games, he isn’t worth keeping on your fantasy team.

Guillaume Latendresse
Guillaume has been relegated to the third line and his numbers have suffered as a result. His stats speak for themselves: 2 goals, 1 assist and a -4 in 21 games played.

INJURY REPORT

Ryan Smyth
Smyth is expected to miss 4 weeks with an upper body injury. Expect LA’s top line to lose some of its punch, with Alexander Frolov likely taking over as first line Left Winger.

Brian Gionta
The bad news is that Gionta is out indefinitely with a broken left foot. Glen Metropolit will make the leap to the top unit because of the offense he’s uncharacteristically produced.

Alex Goligoski AND Jay McKee
The Penguins defence is now the most depleted in the NHL, possibly in NHL history. They will be playing without 5 of their top 6 defenceman. The only surviving NHL regular (if you can call him that) is Mark Eaton. It is hard to say who will play where, but Pittsburgh’s defensive core is now home to the likes of Deryk Engelland and Nathan Guenin. Relief is on the way though, as Orpik and Gonchar are expected back as soon as this weekend.

Alexander Semin
Luckily Ovechkin is back, because Semin will be out until at least late November with a wrist injury. Successful rookie Mathieu Perrault might get the call on the second line.

Mike Knuble
Knuble is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a broken finger. Look for Brooks Laich to gain some extra ice time in his absence.

    You asked what we look like… An alarming number of us are overweight. I’m actually doing something about it, and reading books like “Wishful Drinking” or Michael J. Fox’s “Always Looking Up” helps me maintain my sense of humor. If people with real, permanent problems can overcome them, maintain a sense of humor, contribute to society and make other people happy, I should be able to diet and exercise without wallowing in self-pity. It’s easy to make fun of public people who have gained a few pounds when we are stuffing ourselves until our arteries turn to concrete. (The government will fix health care and take care of us, right?) We think we are so politically correct because we do not discriminate against whatever race we are not currently supposed to discriminate against. So why not instead lash out against entertainers who have the audacity to age? This reminds me of that explanation you gave about Lucas owning your likeness and having to give permission to use it. Well, I want to know when he is going to pay his dues to those of us who actually do look like Jabba, Yoda or Jar Jar. Cough it up, George!!!
