Examining New Jersey’s Dominance Over Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been endlessly challenged to compete with the New Jersey Devils this season, as the numbers plainly prove.
The season series between the Atlantic division rivals finished with the Devils besting the Penguins in all six of their meetings.
These weren’t closely fought inter-division battles you’d expect from the highly competitive Atlantic division — the Devils outscored the Penguins 22-5, winning virtually every period of the six games.
New Jersey prevailed by scores of 4-1, 4-1, 4-0, 2-0, 3-1 and 5-2.
The final score over six games? New Jersey 22, Pittsburgh 5.
This works out to 3.66 goals-per-game for the Devils, which would place them behind only Washington if projected over a full season. For the Penguins, 5 goals over 6 games works out to 0.83 goals per game, which would (obviously) put them dead last in the goals-for department. Over a full season at these paces, the Devils would score 315 times and the Penguins would score 68 times. Thankfully for the Penguins, there are another 28 teams to play.
Goaltending statistics perhaps speak louder than any when sizing up the season series. Here are the comparative stats:
Martin Brodeur: 182 saves on 187 shots — .973 save percentage, 0.83 GAA, 2 Shutouts
Marc-Andre Fleury: 93 saves on 111 shots — .837 save percentage, pulled twice.
Brodeur was named the game’s First Star three times and the Third Star twice. Of 18 total Three Star spots, 16 were Devils and two were Penguins. (Alex Goligoski and Brent Johnson).
Brent Johnson came in twice to relieve Fleury and stopped all 15 shots in combined relief efforts. Johnson stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 2-0 loss.
Pittsburgh’s top guns Sid and Gino didn’t make a difference either:
Sidney Crosby: 6 GP, 3pts, minus-6
Evgeni Malkin: 4 GP, 0 points, minus-4
…Compared to a couple of New Jersey’s top scoring threats:
Zach Parise: 6 GP, 9 pts, +11
Jamie Langenbrunner: 6 GP, 2pts, +2
The Penguins’ powerplay has been in the bottom third of the NHL all season and it certainly wasn’t aided by the Devils, who shut down Pittsburgh on all 21 man-advantage opportunities.
If the Devils meet the Penguins it will likely be beyond the first round, as both clubs occupy top four spots in the East.
Matchups can be a funny thing; many would call the Penguins the best team in hockey, but against the Devils they play like the expansion Ottawa Senators. If Dan Bylsma tweaked his gameplan heading into every tilt with the Devils, he’s yet to make the right adjustment. Bylsma understands the possibility of hooking up with New Jersey in the playoffs, so bet on his team taking a different approach if they hook up with their division rivals this Spring.

this is just a theory obviously, but, there is this wildly held assumption that Sidney grew up in a devout catholic household with an absentee hairdressing father, who by virtue of his religion denounced any speak of or meddling with the devil or any derivatives of satan or damian. hence, the poor poor performance against New Jersey.
