David Branch Comes Down Too Hard On Liambas
It seems like not even a weekend passes by nowadays before hockey fans are forced to watch a video clip of a devastating injury as the result of a vicious body check.
On October 30th, Erie Otters forward Michael Liambas rocked Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ben Fanelli into the end boards, fracturing his skull and sending him into critical condition at Hamilton General Hospital.
Days after the incident, OHL commissioner David Branch suspended Liambas for the remainder of the 2009-10 OHL regular season and playoffs. As a 20 year-old over-age forward, this effectively ended his professional hockey career.
At this point, there has been much speculation over whether or not the hit was clean. Bob McKenzie thinks the suspension was harsh, but necessary. Don Cherry didn’t address the hit directly, but gave young players tips on how to absorb body checks.
Maybe this is another incident to add to the long list of “hits to the head”, and that it’s indeed the right time someone finally took a stance against this kind of violence in our game.
Or maybe the suspension handed down by David Branch was too harsh. In reality, it would have been a standard (albeit ferocious) body check if it weren’t for a costly mistake at the last second.
Now, if you watch as Fanelli comes around the back of the net, you can clearly see that at the very last second, just as he passes the puck, he turns his back to the play.
This is a dangerous move when you are coming around the back of the net with your head down, and there is a forward barreling down on you — a forward you can see coming. Fanelli should have braced himself for the contact.
No disrespect is meant towards Ben Fanelli and his family. He was released from hospital this week and we wish him a full recovery and a return to the ice as soon as possible.
However, the suspension handed down by the OHL was far too severe for this incident. Granted, Liambas should have been called for charging — He did take more than three full strides to make the hit.
Branch without a doubt used this incident to set a precedent moving forward when it comes to respect in his league, but Liambas’ history unquestionably factored in as well. Liambas, a player who has trouble scoring goals but no trouble amassing penalty minutes, hadn’t been the most law-abiding OHLer prior to this incident.
But he didn’t leave his feet. His hands were at his sides. He made shoulder to shoulder contact. And he didn’t blatantly hit Fanelli from behind.
Liambas’ intention was not to seriously injure Fanelli. He has stated that several times, and has even publicly stated that he will not appeal the decision of the OHL. In reality, Liambas’ suspension reflects the injuries sustained to Fanelli rather than his intent on the play.
There are a few lessons to be learned from this hit and the surrounding media attention.
1. Players need to tighten their chinstraps, because in this accident, a helmet properly fastened on his head would have diminished the injury to Ben Fanelli.
2. The OHL should take another look at the over-age player rules. Should 20-year-olds really be playing with 16 year olds? The OHL, NCAA and CIS are the only leagues that allow for such an age gap, where grown men are allowed to play against adolescents.
3. A precedent for suspensions on violent hits should have been set a long time ago. If David Branch is trying to set an example, this is not the incident that should set the mark. Unfortunately there is no going back now.
4. For such a severe suspension to result from a mostly-legal play, the rules themselves should be called into question and re-examined. Branch cited the “distance travelled” as really the only illegal part of the play. The injury resulted for the most part because of the intensity of the Liambas’ hit — and nowhere in the rulebook is there a cap on intensity.
The way discussions have been going in recent years, the precedent was inevitably going to be set at someone’s expense, and it appears Michael Liambas is that person.
The next time there is a violent hit in the OHL, and a player is seriously injured, the world will be watching.
And David Branch will have another tough decision to make.

Yea, it’s free. But takes away the whole competitive nature of MMORPG’s by making better equipment/quests available through purchase. Meaning whoever spends the most money on the game become the “best” players. As opposed to investing skill and time.

We had our Cocker Spaniel sleep in our bed his whole life. It didn’t effect his personality at all. But it was kind of a pain for us. He was a bed-hog. Now we have a new puppy and we are NOT letting him sleep in our bed. It would be kind of cute now but if you start it’ll be hard to stop. He sleeps in a kennel right next to our bed. .It’s more a personal preference…whatever you’re comfortable with. I’m relieved that this time around we’re not going to do it.

The kid he hit shouldnt have turned away from the check at the last second, and he shouldnt have had his helmet on so loose. It probably looked badass to have his strap so loose… the kids these days need to forget that and play safe

Generally I try and get my mix of Vitamin E from pills. While I’d really enjoy to via a fantastic diet it can be rather hard to at all times.
