Avalanche Fans Have Reason For Optimism
There’s a reason that just about everyone had predicted the Avalanche to finish out of the playoffs before this season started, as the club is admittedly in a rebuilding phase. With long-time captain Joe Sakic hanging ‘em up for good, and recent big ticket UFA signing Ryan Smyth shipped off to Los Angeles, spectators had reason to believe the Avs would bottom out this year.
After bursting forth as the biggest surprise team of this season’s early stages, we can still safely predict the Avs won’t maintain their current pace — they will most likely fall short of the post season.
However, their early enthusiastic surge gives fans of the Burgundy and Blue some well-justified optimism about their club.
It is paramount for a GM to identify the short and long-term value of a player’s services, and in this regard, the asset of Ryan Smyth was handled masterfully by the Avalanche. When it became apparent that 33-year-old Smyth would not be part of the winning future in Colorado, he was peddled to the Kings, which brought back Kyle Quincey, who had a quietly successful year with LA in 08-09. In making the deal, the Avs brought in a piece who could immediately impact the defense core and make the team younger, not to mention cheaper. Quincey has 6 points in 6 games this year, providing a spark to a defense that was among the worst in the NHL a year ago.
2007 14th overall pick Kevin Shattenkirk is almost ready for full-time action, and he’s supposed to be a dandy. Along with Quincey, Colorado has two key pieces to build around on the back end moving forward.
Centre ice might be the team’s most promising position, as Paul Stastny (who is already a star) and Matt Duchene (who very much looks like a future star) will give the club one of the league’s most decorated duos in as little as two seasons.
Duchene will be a coach’s favourite, as he does just about everything well. He is a better all-around player than John Tavares, who was likely favoured as the first overall pick because of his unbelievable ability to score goals. Duchene is a better skater, passer and penalty killer than Tavares, and he’s already shown tremendous poise at the NHL level. Oh, and he’ll put up points too, with an upside somewhere close to 100.
And the “strength at centre” blueprint is not a bad one to follow, as the league’s elite teams generally ice two stars up the middle — Take for instance the last 4 Stanley Cup champions: Pittsburgh had Crosby and Malkin, Detroit had Zetterberg and Datsyuk, Anaheim had Getzlaf and McDonald, Carolina had Staal and Brind’Amour. A developed Duchene, along with Stastny, will give Avalanche an enviable centre ice tandem.
While the departure of Smyth and Sakic have left some holes, this club boasts a good top-6 group, including a legitimate top line of Wolski, Stastny and Hejduk. Stastny and Wolski, along with Matt Duchene, give the Avs three substantial building block youngsters up front. This makes the rebuild considerably more encouraging, especially because the future is showing their worth before management’s eyes on a nightly basis.
