Around the Olympics: Two Upsets In One Day
As the men’s Olympic Hockey tournament continues in Vancouver, Crosby and Ovechkin fail to lead their teams past inferior competition, each playing a prominent role in the shootout — but for different reasons.
If the Olympic tournament needed some drama, they got it. Canada barely beat Switzerland in a shootout, and Slovakia upset Russia on a shootout winner by Pavol Demitra. Here are some more thoughts on yesterday’s madness:
- Sidney Crosby is a superstitious guy. Once he tapes up his sticks before a game, nobody is allowed to touch them. If for some reason there is a finger laid upon his instrument, he is compelled to tear off the tape and start again. He also never calls his mother on game days, because every time he has done so, he has been injured. Playing for a national team that once buried a coin under the ice for good luck, Sid’s habits aren’t that strange.
- Crosby was called upon twice in the shootout, a rule that is unique to international competition. He was denied on his first attempt by Jonas Hiller, but buried his second chance and won the game for Canada. Including his NHL totals, Sid the Kid is now 7 for 9 in the shootout this season, good for a 77% success rate.
- Swiss netminder Jonas Hiller played a brilliant game on Thursday night, stopping 47 shots in regulation and three more in the shootout. Canada has run into a hot Swiss netminder in the last two Olympic tournaments. In 2006, it was Martin Gerber, who stopped 56 shots and earned the shutout in a 2-0 victory. There will be much speculation in the coming days about whether Canada has run into the same problem they did four years ago — the inability to score goals.
- Jarome Iginla and Brent Seabrook played very few minutes in the third period and were in the dressing room for part of the final frame. Already there is a panic spreading across the nation about Canada’s “uninspired” play — they will also have to answer questions about these injuries and who will get more ice-time as a result.
- The United States played Norway on Thursday afternoon in their second game of the Olympic tournament. Team USA cruised to a 6-1 victory, with Ryan Miller making a whopping 10 saves. Norwegian goaltender Pal Grotnes put in another valiant effort, stopping 33 shots. Grotnes has surely caught the attention of NHL teams during his games against Canada and the USA, so don’t be surprised if you see his name come up in the offseason.
- David Backes, a fourth line player on Team USA, has been one of their most impressive players. Backes scored on a beautiful end-to-end rush in a 3-1 win over Switzerland on Tuesday, and had an assist on Thursday afternoon vs. the Norwegians.
- Phil Kessel is being Phil Kessel so far in this tournament. He was absolutely invisible in game one, only to explode with a goal, multiple scoring chances and dominant stretches of play in game two versus Norway.
- Canada and USA will match up on Sunday, entering the game having played the same opponents. Canada blew out Norway 8-0, while the States beat them 6-1. Canada struggled against Switzerland, while the States cruised to a 3-1 victory. Team USA has been the tournament’s most impressive team and will truly be a test for Canada. The Americans are for real this year.
- However, Team USA gave up at least six 2-on-1’s to the Norwegian team — perhaps you can get away with such sloppy play versus unspectacular talent, but the Canadians will bury those chances more often than not.
- Alex Ovechkin isn’t a shootout guy, and the Russian coaching staff have failed to accept that, choosing Ovechkin to shoot three times versus the Slovaks. Alexander Radulov was apparently chomping at the bit to get his shootout attempt, as were other Russian snipers.
- Put your money on Jaroslav Halak to steal another game from a superior hockey team. As a Montreal Canadien, he routinely steps up when facing 35+ shots and can be almost impossible to beat. Chara standing in front of him helps his cause.

I believe we should go back to amateur athletes playing in the Olympics. To throw a group of professional players together with little or no practice to play as a team unit and expect them to win an olympic medal is ridiculous. They spend too much time trying to make it all look pretty with finesse passing and not enough time shooting the puck. Christy, .Last summer when I was researching fig preserve recipes, I stumbled upon some information about the lemon juice. Apparently, the lemon is needed for the mixture to be a safe acidity–again with the botulism thing….anyway, the article stated that bottled lemon juice should always be used because the acidity is regulated (every brand, everywhere is the same acidity). They warned against using fresh lemon because lemons differ from variety to variety. .Going to the Raleigh, NC Farmer’s Market tomorrow with my mom to get peaches and tomatoes to can! WooHoo! There is much to like on KPFK. Pacifica seems to be an easy target for our host… and yes, there are warts aplenty. At the same time KPFK does have some of the most compelling and interesting radio on the dial. Our host has acknowledged that KPFK is (somewhat) on the mend but intimates that it may be too late. .I hope not. .I keep a WiFi radio and have access to most radio stations on the planet (via an online aggregator) and for free. I keep a dozen or so presets to mostly university stations in South America and Europe. I keep going back to certain shows on Pacifica because they are good. If you listen pls support the station as the network will be missed if it is gone. Has our host taken a swipe at KFI yet? Talk about crazies… in the runup to Iraq War II the morning man kept referring to the UN Weapons Inspector, Hans Blix as “Hans Bleeeex!” .The pair on in the afternoon are overjoyed in having a drive-time beer hall to expound on every far right theory as to how Obama has fucked the country…. while at night the saucer-men take charge coast to coast. If our host is going to pontificate on unstated piccadillos of Chomsky and Zinn why not a good shot at what is pretending to be mainstream. .BTW what in oeuvre of Chomsky & Zinn does our host find so distateful? Is it a critique of empire?

Having grown up on the Westside, I talked about my recent move to Koreatown as “moving out” there; by implication, the Westside figures as a kind of central location in my imagination, for better and for worse. Your points about Western and the history of the LA built environment are well put, but I might add one defense of calling yourself “eastside” (as much as the term bugs you). What Jesus might be trying to do is argue for a way of living in opposition to what the Westside represents (cars, suburban space, lawns, anonymity, etc). I don’t know – not having read his stuff nor read his work, I’m not really in a position to say. But there might be a way in which he’s trying to claim an Angeleno identity not wrapped up in the Westside; and even though we are on the old western marches of the city, that’s still east of the image of Los Angeles. It’s a great argument either way.
