To touch on various happenings around the league:

- Mike Green’s suspension is well deserved, but the severity is laughable. Circumstances suggest that Green was clearly looking to injure when he delivered the elbow, as he had Frolik in his sights with his elbow out seconds ahead of time. Missing Green for three games hurts the Capitals, but does it hurt their chances of winning the division, or even Green’s chances of garnering a Norris trophy nomination? Colin Campbell has made it clear to the media that a suspension takes into account the context of an infraction to determine the severity of the punishment. In this case, Green’s offense wasn’t a result of poor split-second decision making, it was an intentional cheap shot for the purposes of revenge.

- When you consider the terrific seasons in the history of the Ottawa Senators, you wouldn’t at all expect this year’s rendition of the team to record the longest winning streak in franchise history. The Sens’ current 9-gamer has surprised many, as Ottawa had been a middle-of-the-pack team prior to their current surge. The 2002-03 Senators were President’s Trophy winners who reached the Conference Finals, and the 2006-07 Sens reached the Stanley Cup Finals — however, the franchise’s longest winning streak now belongs to the 2009-10 team. They will look to push the streak to 10 games Wednesday in Buffalo. Interestingly, the Senators had lost 5 straight games before beginning their winning streak on January 14th.

- Jonas Hiller’s contract extension will without a doubt impact the summer’s free agent goalie market. Because of Hiller’s age and relatively inexpensive asking price, he would have received numerous offers on July 1st from teams looking to shore up their goaltending. In particular, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brian Burke were likely interested, as it was Burke who signed Hiller as a free agent while GM in Anaheim, in a similar fashion to Burke’s signing of Jonas Gustavsson. Burke will likely set his sights on one of the remaining free agent goaltenders, which includes Marty Turco, Evgeni Nabokov, Dan Ellis, Chris Mason, Antero Niittymaki and Pekka Rinne.

- As reported here by Ken Campbell of THN, the Lightning will soon be owned officially by Jeffrey Vinik, whose first order of business will be to cut costs. Vincent Lecavalier is strongly rumoured to be on the outs if Vinik gets his way, as Lecavalier’s deal has another 10 years remaining, paying 10 million for the next six seasons. Campbell also mentioned a deal that was in place last summer between Montreal and Tampa Bay which would have sent Carey Price, Tomas Plekanec and a prospect to the Lightning in exchange for Lecavalier. Gary Bettman apparently intervened and blocked the trade when owner Len Barrie refused to approve the deal. The speculation is that Vinik will move Lecavalier once he takes the reigns of the club — whether at the trade deadline or in the summer, his priority will be to cut costs and move Vinny elsewhere. Campbell speculates the L.A. Kings have expressed interest, but a deal has not yet been agreed upon. With trade talk in Montreal surrounding the goaltenders, might the Habs get back in the mix?

    WOW – you truly captured the magic of that day! It was SUCH a blast to create these bouquets – the theme, “Elegant decay” was so unlike what we usually get for a wedding! Since we don’t always get to stay for the whole shoot, it’s super fun to see our creations being used (we did the bouquet the model was holding & the utterly romantic ranunculus/garden rose one) I didn’t even know the model got to wear our magnolia blossoms for the shoot. The images are beautiful, super clear (love that HD!) and very artistically done. I think Seattle Bride Readers who see this will really get pulled into this behind the scenes sneak preview and will want to rush out to see the final result!

    I think this is a lovely idea, and I definitely agree that we will be handling this issue differently and more prudently than it was handled when I was an adolescent! All this talk of “purity” should not be taken to mean that you are somehow permanently sullied. When you know better, you do better, and God can heal all wounds. There is evidence to suggest that an unthinking emphasis on abstinence only encourages teens to be unprepared for sexual situations. The rate of intercourse is just about the same for conservative christian teens as it is for the general population–the former put it off a few months longer but are less likely to use contraception. I worry that kids are being held to burdens that they aren’t helped to bear, and the courtship model is entirely worth holding up in instead of the “start dating when you are fifteen but don’t have sex” model which only leads to heartbreak. BUT, regardless of your past experiences, even if you chose to have sex or had it pushed on you unprepared or unwilling, God can heal.

    Did you know that (in Greek) the same word Jesus used for “denial” of self is the same word that He used when He predicted Peter’s denial of Him? I used to think of denying self as being a massive concentration of self control that would prevent me from doing things I think might be fun (ie “gratifying the flesh). And I do still believe that sometimes we ARE supposed to tell ourselves “no” when we are wanting certain things. I’m sure I don’t tell myself “no” often enough. But the concept is so much more penetrating. Denial of self is a violent, adamant disassociation with flesh-centered self-worship. It is saying of my still-present sin nature that I no longer want anything to do with it. That I want it to just die and go away forever because I can see that being my own god only leads to destruction. And you are so right that the reminder to maintain this attitude needs to be constant! Thanks Kelly for sharing your heart

    It looks like the third_party directory is just a default “package” location for adding shared libraries, models, etc. Not really used for anything just yet, but could be very handy if your third_party folder was a symlink.
